It is a California Air Resources Board mandated regulation to test heavy-duty vehicles’ emissions control systems for proper operation. Clean Truck Check applies to nearly all diesel and alternative fuel heavy-duty vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) over 14,000 pounds that operate on California public roads.

This includes both in-state and out-of-state vehicles, as well as public vehicles (federal, state, and local government); motorcoaches; transit, shuttle and school buses; hybrid  diesel vehicles; commercial vehicles; personal vehicles; California registered motorhomes; single vehicle fleets; and vehicles registered outside of California (not including motorhomes).

EXCEPTIONS:

The heavy-duty vehicle types shown below are exempt from the regulation:

  • Zero-emission vehicles
  • Military tactical vehicles (title 13, CCR, section 1905)
  • Emergency vehicles (California Vehicle Code section 165 or California Health and Safety Code section 1797.84)
  • Historical vehicles (authorized by California Vehicle Code section 5004)
  • New vehicles with engines certified to the most stringent optional, NOx standard (less than or equal to 0.01 g/bhp-hr) -Only during the first four years of Clean Truck Check implementation (2023-2027)
  • Vehicles operating under an experimental permit (authorized by California Health and Safety Code section 43014)
  • Motorhomes registered outside of California

Mobile Testing

With comprehensive mobile testing services, including OBD and Opacity (smoke) tests, they travel from Corning, CA, to the California-Oregon border, delivering top-tier services directly to clients.

Motorhome and Agricultural Vehicles Compliance Requirements!

California registered motorhomes (including recreational and emergency use motorhomes), and vehicles that meet the requirements to be designated as agricultural vehicles, are only required to Submit to emissions compliance testing once annually.
Vehicle registration compliance deadlines will align with the vehicle's DMV registration expiration date. Note that this may vary for the 2024 compliance deadline.
Vehicles registered outside of CA and CA-exempt vehicles will have compliance deadlines based on the last digit in the VIN.

In 2024, the compliance demonstration will require payment of the 2024 annual compliance fee and clearance of any outstanding enforcement violations on the vehicle in question.
Emissions compliance testing requirements are effective starting October 1, 2024. All Compliance deadlines of January 1, 2025, or later will require passing compliance tests to be submitted as part of the compliance demonstrations. VEHICLES MAY SUBMIT TESTS NO MORE THAN 90 DAYS PRIOR TO VEHICLES’S COMPLIANCE DEADLINES.
